Anonymous asked: I'm a jerk? Seriously? I asked you a question, you didn't answer me, you were rude to me. And I'm the jerk? The simple mind? Is this how you treat who is critical of what Marvel is doing to heroes? That drives fans away, Mr. Jordan. We LOVE these characters, sir. Just understand this, please.

jordandwhiteqna:

Ok, let me answer this one with complete sincerity, no joking at all.

First off, I still don’t know what question you are referring to. You’re asking questions anonymously, remember, so I have no way of knowing what other questions you’ve written other than context clues in your current one.

So–based off the context clues in this one (your reference to my “simple mind” response) I am guessing you wrote this:
‘but then again, I think killing is wrong pretty much across the board.’ –  Oookay– the only exception was that stupid superiorrrraaarrrgh spider-man. The maniac sociopath that Mr. Slott pushed us. And you loved it.

That first line was you quoting me. The rest of the post…again, does not contain a question. And in that non-question you called a friend of mine a sociopath which you then used to cast an aspersion on me by saying I loved the work of a sociopath.  I responded to your very rude post in a very flip manner, but even so, I did so because your logic is faulty. I said I believe killing is wrong, you responded by pointing out that I like Superior Spider-Man.  I do–and when he kills people, I think he is doing the wrong thing. He is a villain, Otto Octavius, and does many bad things before he eventually learns how to be a (slighty) better person before dying. That’s good storytelling, and storytelling with a FIRM moral grounding, not remotely the work of a sociopath.

Now, we still have not found this question you’ve accused me of not answering. Let’s take a leap and guess that you asked the question you quoted my response to there, when I said I thought killing was wrong. That ask was:
I think something that would help and I am not trolling by saying this is to stop superheroes committing acts that meet the UN definition of acts of genocide. I know you don’t stop that overall but at least in the books that you oversee as editor. I mean how am I expected to buy into Black Bolt or Scarlet Witch being heroes after what they have done and then have everyone being okay with it. I think that’s also why people are so mystified with the Scott-Hitler comparison.

Again…no question was asked. But I think my response was pretty great and I stand behind it, talking about examples of genocide in comics I’ve worked on and/or seen in comics while here.

So I still have not found this big question I have refused to answer…and which you feel so strongly about. Is it possible it’s a question you asked later? I suppose that’s possible, but once you start calling people sociopaths that you have never met and know nothing about…yeah, I think it’s ok for me to be dismissive of you. You ARE the jerk in that situation, I am afraid.

I like interacting with fans, but I don’t like interacting with you, which is unfortunate. Apparently, we both love Spider-Man a lot–there is probably a lot we could talk about if you wanted to do it in a polite manner. I have often said that while I hate all religion, Spider-Man is for me all the positive things in my life that religious people say religion is for them. He is that big a part of me. So, you don’t need to tell me what it’s like to love these characters. I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS. But, to go back to the religious metaphor, I am not dogmatic about these characters, and I realize that the beauty that we get out of the characters and stories is more important than the fiction life the fictional characters live.

This was a long post to say…no one wants you to be driven away from the characters or comics. But I would like you to think about your words before you write them anonymously.

I actually asked the question the genocide that you quoted. I don’t tend to use tumblr so I asked the question anonymously rather than login. I decided to login as I don’t want to lumped in the other questioner.

I was actually satisfied with the answer you gave since I had phrased the question more poorly than I realized.

Essentially it was less of a question more of a request.

I think for me I have felt there has been a lack foresight from Marvel editorial when heroes have committed these horrible acts such Wanda with M-Day, Black Bolt with the release of the Terrigen Mists, the Illuminati in general, IRON MAN etc.

The characters are going too far for them to be considered “heroes” in my view and legitimate redemption stories don’t tend to happen anymore(ironically I think Emma Frost was the last good one) because maybe to reference this “old” story the book might not be considered “new reader friendly” or the character is about to featured in a movie so Marvel is going “back to basics” with the character so what they have done is ignored or maybe the lines involved in this story are lacking cohension or agreement with the exact consequences of the character’s action/s.

Essentially what I was asking was than in the future when stories were a hero does something awful that could be considered genocide it isn’t done lightly and that it’s thoroughly gone through before the book is even announced.

It’s also not that I don’t want serious topics to be tackled in comics, I do. PAD did some amazing work with Polaris and PTSD in X-Factor for example that I loved. It just makes me uncomfortable to see Earth Mightiest Heroes welcome X character back after they have just committed an atrocity because for me it just mares all the characters and it runs contrary to the escaspism of a superhero comic to me.

Your a young editor at Marvel so your scope of influence will likely grow in the future so that’s why I made the comment to you in the hopes that you take onboard what I saying because it’s impacting my enjoyment of the books and I honestly can’t remember the last book I have bought.

I want to enjoy the books again. I don’t want the fact that I have been reading for a long time to be an obstacle to enjoying a story because I want the stories and characters to make sense to me too.

I really wasn’t coming at you but it’s pretty hard to be clear with a limited amount of characters(and I tend to meander)

P.S I also say this someone who doesn’t live in their parents basement, maintains a full time job, has a sex life and loads of “real world” friends which in all honestly I think the status quo for the majority of people who have been complaining. We’re a more “online” society now so what people say on social media in my view is more accurate to the feelings of the audience now than it was even five years ago.

P.S.S I also think you are getting some many complaints about books that you don’t work on due to the press secretary title. When I first starting visiting your page I honestly thought you had taken over tumblr duties from Tom Brevoort.

Anonymous asked: Surely the best way for us to influence change is to not complain because it's not listened to. Controversy sells. Instead just not buy the books that annoy us. I am completely put off by the retcon that the twins aren't Magneto's that I won't buy Uncanny Avengers Volume 2. I also don't like Remender Scarlet Witch. At least the impression I've been given from reading your formspring is that quality is measured fiscally. If sales drop on a successful book you know something is not working.

brevoortformspring:

All of this is pretty true. It’s you guys and what you do that ultimately determines when something is working or not.

peppermonster it’s not cruel unfortunately it’s the reality of being a comic book fan. In this instance you are very vocal about how much you dislike this change. I hate it but I recognize the only way to get this changed back is to not buy the book. They don’t care if we buy and complain. They care if we don’t buy. The great thing about being a comic book fan though is that there are so many other characters out there that you can fall in love with while Quicksilver goes through this movie bullshit. When things like this happens it just shows how important writers are in the industry. We should really be following writers when they move books more so than characters.

Women don’t let men sit next to them for safety.

This was ages back but I never saw your response. The women I was talking about weren’t moving their bags for other women to sit down either. They were occupying two spaces as one person. As I said it wasn’t limited to women, but it was mostly women.

Although I do see where your coming from because in some cases that’s probably true.

What’s going on?

Peter David (writer of All New X-Factor) announced that the series will be cancelled at issue #20 because sales are low. (source) There are a great deal of people who adore this comic, and we want to share that awesome with everyone else. This is a campaign to lift that cancellation and try to renew the series.

What is being done?

If you care about All New X-Factor as much as we do, we urge you to take action. We are planning on setting up times to attempt to get #SaveANXF trending on Twitter to introduce the series to a wider audience. There are 6 issues left until the series is scheduled to come to an end. If we can raise sales and get Marvel’s attention, perhaps we can save it - or at least increase the possibility of the characters sticking around. We would also like to propose an “All New X-Factor Week” at some point in the near future; participation is encouraged to further spread the word.

How can I help?

If you can think of anything else, let us know! We want as many people to be involved as possible. Follow us on twitter: @saveanxf. Spread the news. Reblog/retweet. Most importantly, buy All New X-Factor.

Thank you for your support!

YES.YES.YES. People need to realise this

This belongs more on Facebook than it does on tumblr.

i think you’re missing out on some of tumblr then… but it should be on facebook too, it should be on every social media site!

What I mean is that people on tumblr seem better at sympathy and know how to treat others but there’s a lot of homophobic people and swagfags who blame rape victims for what happened to them on Facebook.

emcomicsphotosnstuff asked: What's your opinion of people who charge for autographs or photos at cons? It just comes across super douchey to me since as I understand it and I could be wrong the con's pay for their accomodation and flights and the people paying are already supporting their projects. It's not as common among comic book people but it's common at cons. When did the thread start?

vbartilucci:

brevoortformspring:

Not every con pays for the accommodations of every guest. And even if those guests are being paid for, they are giving up their time to be in attendance. As individuals, they are free to charge whatever they think is fair for whatever—and you as a consumer are free to choose to pay that price or to forgo.

The people paying to attend the convention are paying for just that—to attend the convention. And often, the folks who would like an autograph or a photo or a sketch or whatever aren’t people who are supporting their projects—they’re simply people who like free stuff. Not everybody, of course, but enough of them. All you need to do is to go to eBay to see how many signatures and sketches that were done at conventions are being auctioned off by those they were done for.

So everybody is entitled to charge what they want, and everybody is entitled to partake or not.

I’ve written about this a great deal.  Long story short, there’s two points:

1) Inker Gotta Eat.

Not everybody makes millions at comics.  Especially the older creators whose con appearances may make up a good chunk of their income. A convention appearance is a LOT more expensive than it was in the days of the Fred Greenberg shows. Total up the cost of a table/booth and travel to the con if the con’s not paying and there’s a lot of money that needs to be made up.

2) People are making a mint off those sketches.

every artist has a story about a guy claiming they wanted a sketch for their kid, only to see the sketch up on eBay that night. It’s much like the lucrative aftermarket for sports stars’ autographs - the main reason people started charging was they knew people were flipping the items to other collectors at a profit, so the players figured they should get a cut up front.

I wrote about it (as well as some tips) at comicMix a while back.

QUEST OF DRAWERS: HOW TO BE A CONVENTION SKETCH COLLECTOR

I think people misinterpreted me. No issue with artists charging for original sketches. It’s the signings. I’ve already purchased the book and supported the writer. I don’t see why I’m being charged to get it signed. From a business point of view I question it too because I think a good experience with a writer at a con is long time more valuable to a writer. I met Kelly Sue a con. I’m not a fan of the western genre but I gave Pretty Deadly a go because I’d liked DeConnick’s other work and I liked her when I met her because she was so nice that it encouraged me to give something a chance that’s not in my area of regular interest.

In the old days, if someone had a secret they didn’t want to share… you know what they did? They went up a mountain, found a tree, carved a hole in it, and whispered the secret into the hole. Then they covered it with mud. And leave the secret there forever.

……I’m embarassed to say my first thought was an ancient glory hole
